Rockbox open source firmware for the iPod

May 1st, 2006

I keep getting daily emails from iPod owners left high and dry because they can't get hold of a version of of iTunes that works on Windows Me (Apple have left a lot of users high and dry by not supporting this aged but nonetheless still used operating system).  This post if you you guys.

There are a few alternatives to using iTunes (such as using WinAmp and installing the iTunes database importer and the M4P input plugin, detailed here) but here's an even simpler solution - change the firmware altogether for the open source firmware from Rockbox External Link.  What Rockbox seems to lack in style it more than makes up for in functionality and additional features.  I don't have an iPod to test this out on but if I did I think that the first mod I'd make would be to blitz the standard firmware and install this.

The only drawback I can see is that this firmware doesn't support DRM formats such as AAA (iTunes music store) or AMA DRM files.
