Test run Internet Explorer 7 without installing it

April 29th, 2006

Interesting post on the Google Operating System External Link blog on running Internet Explorer 7 without installing it.

To do this you need:

  • The IE7 download
  • Extract it using WinRar External Link
  • Create a batch file to handle all the changes (based on work by Jon Galloway)
  • Running the batch file will carry out the changes and start IE7.  When IE7 is closed the batch file cleans up after itself

This is a great hack but there are potential issues.  I've kept these instructions vague for a reason - if you don't know what any of the above means then this hack isn't for you.  As with most hacks involving the registry things can go wrong.  I've tried this on a virtual PC installation and it works fine but that's no guarantee that it'll work right for you (for example, messing up the batch file in any way could leave you in a world of pain!).
