Just how bad is the iPod Nano problem?

September 26th, 2005

So, just how bad is the iPod Nano problem? You've got some saying External Link that the whole story of the screens cracking and breaking from normal use is just FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt), some who say it's a conspiracy "they" conjured up External Link (whoever "they" are ...), repairers flat out repairing a product that's only been out a couple of weeks External Link and a lot of unhappy External Link customers External Link everywhere External Link. Here's the tale of one customer according to the http://www.flawedmusicplayer.com External Link (site's down at present ...):

“The iPod was in my pocket on the way to work, and when I took it out to show it to all my friends, the LCD was cracked. In my pocket (I wear really baggy clothes) it had somehow met up with the headphones (which were made of metal) and cracked the screen . . .

“I called Apple to see what could be done to fix it. They . . . told me I’d be better off buying a new one, instead of sending it in.”

What I think is going to be interesting is whether Apple comes out and admits there's a problem with the iPod Nano or is this going to be a repeat of the battery fiasco and end up as a lawsuit.

EDIT

BBC News External Link now picks up on the Nano story.
